OPEN TIME TRIALS – CCS RIDERS REVIEW OF THE YEAR AND RESULTS

November 11, 2012

THANKS FOR THE TEXT AND TABLE, ROGER. Looks like hours of work!

It was another very good season for our club riders with 24 members taking part. This is 30% up from last year and the number of individual rides has also increased from 169 to 210. This figure would have been much higher if this summer’s bad weather hadn’t cancelled a lot of events during the season.
A few club records were broken along the way and a couple of team 1st places were achieved, along with a hat full of top 6 positions.
CCS members who rode 2 or more events are reviewed below.

Bob Bush didn’t start his season until late June, but had another decent campaign with 9 rides. The highlights being: a 1.30.29 for the Colchester Rovers 25, and a very good 30.42 in the Team Cambridge 10, on the F2 in July.  As ever, Bob is always one of our most enthusiastic and cheerful competitors.

Rob Davies also broke a couple of records during his 13 ride season. An outstanding 50 TT time of 1.52.50 saw him beat Scott Jones 18 year old record by 54secs He also helped to break the 30 mile Team record along with Damon and James by nearly 16mins on the E2 on a perfect riding day. Rob is a master at finding these perfect days and also posted the seasons fastest 10 and 25 times (for CCS riders) with a 21.20 and a 54.21, both on the E2.  It was a very good return for a limited programme of entries.

Simon Daw was our most prolific rider with 30 rides and was the mainstay of the new club 100 mile team record which was created, along with Darren Rule and Stewart Kirk. He posted a very creditable individual time of 4.23.17.
Together with Jonathan Weatherley, he also secured 1st place in Victoria CC’s 2-Up series with a 3 x 1st places and a 2nd. A team 1st in the Haverhill Wheelers 20 mile Hilly with Jonathan and Damon completed the list. He also had a string of 2nd & 3rd places in individual events and was rarely out of the top 8 in events he entered. A PB in the Lea Valley 30 mile TT rounded off another very good season for Simon who also undertook some grasstrack races to compliment his very busy and varied season.

Damon Day rode very consistently all season during his 24 rides and ventured into new territory with his 1st 50 in which he ducked under the 2hrs with an excellent 1.59.50. His 1st 30 TT also brought results as he was part of the club record breaking team along with Rob and James. Further glory came in the Haverhill Wheelers Hilly, where together with Simon & Jonathan, they were Fastest Team of the Day. He repeated the feat in Sept in the Stow & DCC 10, along with Mat Shotbolt and James as they also claimed fastest team of the day. A very fine early season 56.34 for a 25 and a late season 22.08 for the 10 on the E2 were his best of the year. A very good season!

Len Finch decided that this season was to be his last and finished off his TT career with some panache during his 12 rides. He has always defied his age with consistent times and this year was no different. The 10’s he entered were usually below the 29’s with a best of 28.21 on the early season Lea Valley E2. His fastest 25 was also achieved early season with a 1.12.51 also in a Lea Valley event on his favoured E2 course. He will be missed!

Stewart Kirk had a disjointed season but still managed to grab some TT glory during his 8 rides. He was part of the CCS team memberr of thee  TT glory. A y event, .11.48 time in the Leo CC 30 mile . His best 10 time came late on in the season with a  which created a new club record for the 100 mile TT on the North Norfolk Wheelers May event, with Simon and Darren Rule, with a personal time of 5.11.51. He also finally achieved his ambition to join the sub 1 hour club for a 25 with a 59.50 on the Lea Valley E2 event during April. His best 10 came late on in the season with a very good 24.04 in the VTTA event, again on the E2. Another excellent late season 1.11.48 time in the Leo CC 30 mile on the E2 gave him his 2nd PB of the year.

Barbara Law had a very busy season with 20 rides. She again rode/ran for GB in the World Duathlon Championships (Age Related), this time taking place in Nancy, France and had to be content with ‘only’ 4th place. Still an excellent achievement for one of our club members, around what was a very tricky and technical course. She continued to post consistent times on the TT courses with her best 10 coming on the F2 in the Team Cambridge event in July with a 29.25 and a very good 25 time of 1.17.45 on the E2 VTTA event in June.

Terry Law finally got back in his stride this season, riding 16 events and was invariably below 30mins for his 10’s with an encouraging 28.53 in the E2 VTTA during Sept being his best time. Just one 25 on the B25 Kings Lynn event (the others were inevitably rained off) in August produced a 1.23.10. I expect him to go even better next season.

Barry Lee entered just 5 events and produced 3 very good 10 times, with the best being in the late season E2 VTTA, recording a very decent 26.20. The other 2 were 20 milers with the early Haverhill Wheelers Hilly event producing a best of 1.02.39. He is threatening to buy a new set of wheels for next season, so watch out!

Darren Pratt seems to have finally gotten the taste for Open TT’s and had an ‘interesting’ introduction for his 4 events. His season didn’t start until September in an ECCA 25 at Chelmsford on the notoriously clunky E9 course. A time of 1.06.26 would have been an impressive debut ride, if only he had kept to the left side of a mini roundabout and not the right. He was subsequently disqualified, along with the ‘winner’ who committed the same error. His only 10, on the ECCA E2 event a week later saw him record a PB of 22.45 which was equally impressive for a debut ride at this distance. A 3-Up Team TT the next day in the Chelmer event, with Darren Rule and David Crisp, saw them come home 7th in 1.1.09. Then more woes in the Hainault 2-Up in the E1 Hainault RC event, saw him and his partner failing to start the ride together and were penalised 12mins for their error. I look forward to Darren’s next season!

Darren Rule competed in 7 events and certainly made his mark. If you discount the 2-Up mentioned above in which he ‘almost partnered’ with Darren P, he also started his debut Open TT campaign with some style. He was part of the 100 mile CCS trio that created a new Team club record in May, for that distance, with a remarkable personal time of 4.57.22. His fastest 10 time in the Stow & DCC in September was a PB of 24.32. Bizarrely, the two 25’s (within 2 weeks of each other) entered, produced a time of 1.06.17 each time. Very consistent, very good and both PB’s!

James Rush had a reduced schedule of events this year with 21 rides. A string of top ten places culminated with a best ever 2nd place on the VTTA event at Bungay. His 25’s were invariably under the hour with a excellent best time of 55.42 in April on the Lea Valley E2 event. A Lea Valley event also gave him his best 10 time during May on the E2 with a 21.56. He was also part of the Fastest Team time of the Day, along with Mat Shotbolt & Damon in The Stow & DCC 10 in Sept. He saved the best to last on his final ride of the season by breaking the clubs 30 mile TT record with a 1.06.25, beating Scott Jones’ 20 year old record by 26 secs. This also helped break another club record, together with Rob and Damon’s efforts, for the 30mile Team record, which bettered Mark Jay’s, Alan Wiseman’s and Barry Lee’s 12 year old time by a whopping 15mins 40secs.

Matt Shotbolt rode just the 2 events, due to work constrictions, but managed a very quick 21.26 for 5th place in the Stow & DCC 10 on the B10 and was part of the CCS Fastest Team time of the Day. If we could get him on the TT courses for a full season, he would, without doubt, provide a lot more top placings for CCS!

Matt Traynar competed in 5 events but only finished 3 of them!  An early season 20 miler on the Stow & DCC BS33 course saw a 1.22.28 time. He then posted a very good PB on the Stow & DCC 10 course on the A14 at Rougham with a 28.06 and followed this up 2 weeks later by entering a 50 on CC Breckland’s B50. An excellent PB time of 2.29.01 was his reward on his debut at this distance.

Jonathan Weatherly rode a full season of 23 events and continued to post PB’s throughout the year. His highlight must be winning Victoria CC’s 2-Up Series with Simon Daw. With 3 1st places and a 2nd, they were worthy winners. This was closely followed by being part of the Fastest Team of the Day, in the Haverhill Wheelers Hilly TT in April. Jonathan also found himself regularly in the top ten places with a best of 3rd overall in the East Anglian CC 10 on the B10 during Sept where he recorded a very quick 22.22 which was also a PB. He finally ducked under the golden hour in August in the Fenland Clarion 25 at Sawtry with a well earned 59.03. He was unfortunately visited by the puncture fairy on 3 occasions this season, so nothing has changed there then! A good season and he will get even better next year.

Kirsty White only rode in 2 Opens, but came away with a newly created Club record in one of them. Her 30 mile ride on the Lea Valley E1 course in late Sept produced a 1.39.16 for the CCS record books. One of only two lady CCS riders on the Open TT roads, I hope to see her out more often next year.

Simon Wright, although he only rode one event this year, duly won it! So it would be remiss not to mention him. It was our own Mad March Hilly and Simon’s time of 50.55 for the 22 mile event was not only good enough for 1st place but also a course record. Just imagine what this talented rider would do if he rode a season of Open TT’s!
